Ponferrada to Cacabelos - 18 kms

It has been a short day today as we have stopped at Cacabelos where Maggie's friend died. We are staying where he spent his last night. We left in the dark at 8am this morning (albergue regulations) and did another 5kms walk around the city before we were on the open road again. We have now walked the entire perimeter of the city. Its been a glorious day with no rain and warm temps of around 15 degrees but weather reports show it is getting colder over the next few days. The scenery along the way has been stunning. We are now where Maggie's friend died and she has to decide where to place the memorial shell and then she will walk the rest of the way to Santiago for him. We were walking along the road here when 2 French pilgrims recognised me and rushed up to kiss me on both cheeks. I remembered them from Granon and I gathered from their French conversation that Granon is still top of their list. I am going well in my sandals but my shoes are heavy strung over my backpack. I can walk about 10 kms in my shoes before I have to stop and change over to sandals. We are staying in the municipal albergue here for 5 euros which has cubicles with 2 beds (no bunk beds) but continual piped music which you can't turn down

  1. Try to stay at the Albergue Piedra in Villafranca Jen. Most people stop at Jesus Jato's Ave Fenix but if you have a chance to look at the La Piedra, do - because that is where most of the group will be staying next year.
